I mean, it was basically a throwaway cameo where all he did was upload some numbers... which was completely unnecessary, since, despite the Doctor's contention that giving Mr. Smith remote access would "take a while," all he would have had to do to speed up the process was digitally transmit the necessary information to Mr. Smith himself. And I was about to say that maybe Mr. Smith and the TARDIS have such radically different technology that transferring those numbers would initially have been problematic, but that suggestion is negated by the fact that the machines were able to transmit the realtime video chat data without a hitch.
