“Do you think you’re just a wee bit obsessed?”

…asked the sister last night as she found the pictures on Flickr of my Doctor Who figures. “I’m amazed you took the time to pose them and then actually took pictures! And nice religious view on FaceBook, Mick. You’re sure you’re not obsessed?”

As I’m trying to explain to her what she thinks is an obsession really wouldn’t register on anyone’s obsession scale, when compared to what I’ve seen of other’s…interest in Doctor Who. “There’s always a way to justify it, isn’t there?” she continued, teasing me. “You take these types of things and,”

“Make them a part of me?” I supplied helpfully.

“Exactly.”

And then I prayed she forget I’d sent her the links to the first two parts of Fashionista Fever! and never, ever find the sound files I’ve uploaded, because then she’d never believe the bit about the obsession scale.

I do prefer to be thought of as a fangirl, to be honest.

“Who’s the guy with the Converse?” she asked.

“That’s the Doctor! Didn’t you see him when I was there?”

“I never got to play with your toys, Mickey. Star Tattoo was hogging them.”

“And loving up on Martha.”

“Yeah.”

Reminds me of a scene from “Broadcast News.” 8-year-old, future network news producer, Jane Craig, is typing letters to her pen pals when her father comes in (excerpt taken from dailyscript.com):

FATHER: Finish quickly. I don’t want you getting obsessive about these things. Good night.

We REMAIN WITH Jane who has obviously become disconcerted and troubled.

INT. HOUSE - NIGHT

As Jane moves to room at the other end of the hall — a family room where her Father reads the latest Rolling Stone of the mid-60’s — Hunter Thompson, the New Journalism, the slim Jann Wenner — Jane bursts into the room.

JANE: Dad, you want me to choose my words so carefully and then you just throw a word like ‘obsessive’ at me. Now, unless I’m wrong and…

(enunciating)
…please correct me if I am,

‘obsession’ is practically a psychiatric term… concerning people who don’t have anything else but the object of their obsession — who can’t stop and do anything else. Well, here I am, *stopping* to tell you this. Okay? So would you please try and be a little more precise instead of calling a person something like ‘obsessive.’

******

The way she spits out the last word is hilarious.

One person’s obsession is another’s passion.

Perfect. I used the last bit about one person’s obsession being another’s passion today with my mom, as she went on about OSU and the script Ohio. Is “Broadcast News” the film based on “The Front Page” and “His Girl Friday?” or have I gotten it confused with another movie?

“Broadcast News” - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092699/ - not at all associated with either of those two classic films. Written & produced by James L. Brooks (of “The Simpsons” fame), it’s about the sell-out of TV news for style over substance (oh, yeah . . . there’s this love-triangle thingy between Holly Hunter, Albert Brooks & William Hurt.) This film contains some of my favorite lines & scenes of all time (pretty close to the way I feel about “Nothing Sacred”) - but the ending is kind of weak.

Still, I predict you will find yourself strongly identifying with each of the main characters (and probably falling in love with Holly Hunter.)

That is the movie I was thinking of! You’re right, it’s not associated with His Girl Friday/The Front Page, as Ben Hecht wasn’t credited with the original play, but it’s very similar and has been considered an updating of HGF/TFP in a way. *shrug* I don’t know but what I read, as I’ve never seen it. It may be for no other reason than it takes place in a media outlet and there’s a love triangle involved. But it does sound like something right up my alley! Thanks for the tip!! =)

Many similarities - but BN is very much based on the 1984 mass-layoffs at CBS News. The character of Jane Craig is based directly on CBS Evening News producer Susan Zirinsky, who was a technical adviser on the film.

Ahhh…things I didn’t know until now, nor do I remember at all. But all the more reason to watch it - that and because Holly Hunter is wicked cute. Even if her look is totally ’80s! =)
