He walked by the bathroom and peeked in. “What in God’s name are you doing?” he asked. She stood naked in front of the mirror, deep in concentration.

Glancing at him through the mirror for just a second, she turned her attention back to the reflection of her body and didn’t answer. She moved one way and then the other, studying her profile very carefully, squinting a bit in the harsh light. She turned so her back was to the mirror, trying to look over her left shoulder and then her right, but didn’t have much luck.

Without a word, he reached for the hand mirror laying on the counter and handed it to her, a bemused smile on his face. She took it from him, holding it at eye level and scrutinized herself from behind. First she held the mirror to her left and then to her right, her arm outstretched as far as it could be. She moved the hand mirror so she looked down on herself, then back to eye level, still examining her body. He laughed quietly at her antics, but when her eyes met his in reproach, he covered the laugh with a forced cough and tried to look contrite. “What are you doing?” he asked again, although it was evident.

“Am I showing yet?” she wanted to know, turning back around to look at herself again.

He shook his head. “You’re barely six weeks pregnant,” he pointed out, putting his arms around her, his hands resting on her belly. “There’s a bit of a soft bump, but anyone looking at you would never notice.” He rested his chin on her shoulder and smiled at her reflection. “You may not show for weeks, you know.”

She frowned with a loud sigh, putting her hands over his and leaning back into his chest. “Oooh! It’ll be my luck that I’ll be huge when this is all over. Will you make a sign I can wear around my neck that says, ‘Please don’t feed the elephant’?”

“No, I won’t make a sign for you to wear. You’ll be beautiful,” he replied, brushing his lips against her temple gently. She snorted and made a face; he kissed her temple again and hugged her. “You’ll see,” he whispered into her ear.
