Dear Lalla, I know it’s taken me longer than probably anticipated to realize how extremely awesome you were during your time on Doctor Who and I still think you’re extremely awesome.
Yes, even after I saw this picture.
This…this simply defies everything I know. And even some things I don’t know.
To wit, a few of the things I know:
- You are awesome.
- You were more than a match for Tom Baker on-screen.
- You were probably more than a match for him off-screen, as well.
- Your Romana (and Mary Tamm’s Romana, too, come to think of it) was totally cooler than the Doctor.
- I dig those nautical outfits you wore.
- I’ll probably rewatch all your serials as soon as I get over the true Age of Aquarius Companions.
And a few of the things I don’t know:
- The reason why Ian Chesterton always wore a suit and tie.
- What Barbara Wright hid in that hair helmet (though there has been discussion these two points are somewhat related).
- Escapology and where Jo learned it. Also, the why of the whole thing. It’s an odd thing, isn’t it?
- The radically changing hair length sported by Caroline John in “Doctor Who and the Silurians.”
- The name of the responsible party for deciding Caroline John should don what I totally believe was a wig (and a bad one, at that) in her last two serials.
- Why it took me so long to comprehend your awesomeness.
- What you were thinking with this hair style? Girl, believe me, I understand awkward hair styles. Oh, I certainly do. But this? This makes those wigs look like the Caroline John hair from her first two serials. You know what I mean? Yeah, this hair style makes her wigs look freakin’ good.
I’m just sayin’, is all, Lalla. You’re still tremendous and will be included in the strange cousin susan Tremendous Companion Rotation. I just need to find a little time to make it so.
I remain,
Yours most faithfully–
Mickey Glitter
xoxo

Lovely lady, but that Nik Kershaw hair is rather disturbing.
By the way, I keep meaning to e-mail you about Romana III! She totally seems like she’d be up your alley, what with the actress she was modeled after and all. :)
Gregory – I couldn’t agree more. Her eyes are amazing, but that hair? Amazing in another way and on the other end of the spectrum. Poor wee lass. That was just bad advice.
Wes – wait, what? Romana III? I’m getting a flurry of vague comprehension right now, but it’s not totally gelling in me mind.
Romana III!

Apparently her appearance was based on that of Louise Brooks –

– which fits in very well with your love of ancient screen actresses and silent film and whatnot. :)
The more I think about a Louise Brooks-ish Romana III, the more I think that would have been pretty cool, a totally different look than the first two!
Oh, now that would have been terribly cool. And yes! Louise Brooks! Nice. =)
Went browsing for pics of Lalla with sensible hair and realised that she spent a fair bit of her time with Tom Baker in what looks very much like a schoolgirl outfit.

Isn’t that the truth? I’ve grown quite fond of her schoolgirl/nautical outfits, I must admit. =)
And you have to wonder, would she be allowed such liberties with her wardrobe now?
“Good God, what kind of message are we trying to send young women? Dress like a child if you want a man? The only thing missing is a lollipop…”
*snort* Ow. I just shot soda out of my nose, reading your comment. =)
