How to Discover Classic Doctor Who

I found this by way of Andrew (who, along with Wes, always has the best Who links); when I was introduced to Doctor Who, I jumped in with both feet and didn’t even try to make myself believe I understood what the hell was going on. This, of course, has made it necessary for me to rewatch many of those introductory serials once I figured out WTF was happening. But I’m not complaining at all.

The best part of the article is, yes, you guessed it, a bit about Sarah! Jane!, quite predictably:

“Pyramids Of Mars.” Another one where the Doctor is outclassed and overpowered from start to finish, and he keeps making clever plans that fail horribly. The interplay between Sarah Jane and the Doctor is never better than in this episode — partly because the story’s female director took some of the Doctor’s dialog and gave it to Sarah Jane. So instead of the Doctor explaining everything to Sarah Jane, she’s figuring stuff out on her own.

Even without that, it’s a great primer on how to become acquainted with this veritable legend of television.

“Do you think you’re just a wee bit obsessed?”

…asked the sister last night as she found the pictures on Flickr of my Doctor Who figures. “I’m amazed you took the time to pose them and then actually took pictures! And nice religious view on FaceBook, Mick. You’re sure you’re not obsessed?”

As I’m trying to explain to her what she thinks is an obsession really wouldn’t register on anyone’s obsession scale, when compared to what I’ve seen of other’s…interest in Doctor Who. “There’s always a way to justify it, isn’t there?” she continued, teasing me. “You take these types of things and,”

“Make them a part of me?” I supplied helpfully.

“Exactly.”

And then I prayed she forget I’d sent her the links to the first two parts of Fashionista Fever! and never, ever find the sound files I’ve uploaded, because then she’d never believe the bit about the obsession scale.

I do prefer to be thought of as a fangirl, to be honest.

“Who’s the guy with the Converse?” she asked.

“That’s the Doctor! Didn’t you see him when I was there?”

“I never got to play with your toys, Mickey. Star Tattoo was hogging them.”

“And loving up on Martha.”

“Yeah.”

(My math is off somewhere and I don’t have the desire to figure out where I’ve gone wrong, so I’m editing this post, as well as the following one with no references to actual numbers.)

I know I'm possessed by a he-she alien with really bad skin problems and a terribly ugly ring, but can I just take a minute to do my impression of 'Stop in the Name of Love' for you?

Eldrad must live!

(The sound files are in chronological order by serial.
K-9 and Company: A Girl’s Best Friend is out of place.
I don’t care to correct its placement on the list.
These new mp3s will be found at the bottom of the page.
I’m far, far too lazy to put in an anchor to make your life easier.

How many new S!J!S! sound files did you say you had?

I didn’t, but I’ll tell you anyway. When I get them all posted, there will be 55 and all from The Hand of Fear. I probably went a little overboard, especially when I’ve got five of S!J!S! declaring that “Eldrad must live!” And when there’s one where she doesn’t say a word because she’s bamboozled and unable to come back with a witty and sarcastic rejoinder for the first time ever.

Yeah. It’s pretty hardcore fangirl stuff, this.

Just checking in

I’m still out of town with the emm visiting the niecettes and will be for the next few days. It’s super muggy here right now, not to mention skies full of dark clouds and rain drops keeping the thunder and lightening company.

The flight was uneventful; the dude sitting next to the emm was seriously hung-over and the smell of booze wafting from him was disgusting. The emm tells me he was quite interested in what I was doing on the computer, kept looking over, trying to read the screen.

Star and Bar are absolutely adorable, naturally. Bar’s starting to talk a wee bit, but nothing quite intelligible yet except the words hi and bye. Star is Star and nothing there’s changed. She’s still her very own little person. Stubborn! Opinionated! Wicked smart.

Somehow, although I’m on vacation, I was able to post the second installment of Sarah Jane Smith - Fashionistsa Fever Part Two, entitled Inspiration Can Trip You Up, But You’ll Be Better for It. It’s been cross-posted at Scary-Crayon, as well. I don’t know about Wes, but I’m just going to sit back and wait for that email from Lis Sladen to hit my mailbox, telling me how much she enjoyed reading the first two parts and looks forward to the next two.

As if!

Oh, I do slay myself sometimes.

I couldn’t resist - these are my favorites. I nearly laughed myself sick working on them. Click on them to see the captions.

Harry, please don't say anything to Sarah Jane about girls having cooties.

If you say another word about my scarf, I'll fuck you up. Your gun doesn't scare me, does it, Doctor?

And I'm all, like, Har-reee, I don't like brandy for realz and he, you know, just ignored me.

There have been other things filling my days and sometimes even my early morning hours. No longer am I waking up at 1:30am or 2am like I was for a while. Now there are nights I’m just going to bed at 1:30am or 2am. That hasn’t happened too often, but in the last week or so, I’ve definitely noticed a change in the hours I keep at the end of the day; mornings are still early, but not ass-crack-of-dawn early, though. A nice change, after all the years of getting up early for work and then in the last few months at the factory, getting up even earlier for work.

Sarah Jane mp3s are being uploaded pretty regularly; I’ve got only two more serials left to re-watch as back-end work for Fashionista Fever!, so I suspect this will slow down by week’s end. But, then there’s always the last two episodes of Doctor Who with which to work, not to mention season one of TSJA…

Entirely too much time is being spent creating images for lol capshunz, but I’m having entirely too much fun with it. I’ll eventually need to incorporate more than just Doctor Who capshunz, but due to the insane number of screen caps I’ve got scattered amongst two laptops, that might not happen for a while.

Fashionista Fever! has taken on a life of its own and is now a multi-part project; “A Clotheshorse is Born” has been uploaded and will cross-post on scary-crayon tomorrow. I had no idea I’d have such a blast writing it, but as I said to Wes in a recent email, “It’s been really quite fun, the obvious joy of rewatching all the S! J! S! serials again notwithstanding. Writing again has been good for me, makes me use the brain I feel sometimes atrophying.” Thank goodness, since there are at least three more installments for sure, with the possibility of at least one additional critique of non-serial specific observations - what some may call total over-analysis - but we’ll see.

In order to make these projects (and any others) more accessible, I’ve included direct links to each one’s page in the left-hand sidebar. Handy!

Lest anyone think I’ve been working on these outside projects and watching movie after movie (I’ve pretty much abandoned TARDISvision because everything I’ve watched recently has been a repeat - or a three-peat - until last night, actually) exclusively and conveniently forgetting I’ve now been unemployed for two months to the day, believe me, I haven’t. There’s a pretty rigid schedule I’ve instituted and have been very successful in adhering to it Monday through Friday. Afternoon naps are pretty much a thing of the past, although I will admit dozing off yesterday after lunch while trying to watch “How Awful About Allan.” To be honest, saying I tried watching it isn’t exactly right: I dozed off during the beginning credits. There was something about combining the talents of Aaron Spelling, Anthony Perkins, Julie Harris, and Joan Hackett into a made-for-television vehicle that signaled snoozeville.

Speaking about TARDISvision, I need to post an update. Yes, it’s true. I finally watched a current episode. With the tenth Doctor. And companion Donna Noble. Just as this season is coming to an end. Since this is the first show I’ve actually watched this season most of the references to previous current episodes went right over my head as I watched. But reading the wiki article refreshed my memory on a few others. I was going to bitch about the causal nexus/”Logopolis” reference (thank you, wikipedia!) just now, but then realized how sickly ironic that would be, since there was a certain reference to a certain companion working for a certain magazine that totally didn’t go over my head.

The only other two episodes I’ve seen from this season were “Poison Sky” and “The Sontaran Stratagem,” and I was sick as a dog for both; thus I don’t count them at all. Perfect, since I’ll have almost a full season to get me through the upcoming drought.

Wednesday evening round-up

peeping E.T!I’ve had this picture languishing on my hard drive for quite a while now; I meant to upload it days ago, but just never got around to it. The whole thing creeps me out, but not in the “Oh my God, I can’t look at this!” way. I did express some of that the other night on the phone with Wes; it’s pretty much passed now, but that’s probably more due to the fact it’s still light outside more than anything else.

Instead, it creeps me out on a “What if it’s not fake?” level, because what if it’s really not? No surprise here: I totally believe in aliens like I believe in ghosts, although I’ve never seen any space aliens, so these types of things do stop me up when I slow down long enough to pay attention.

At any rate, here are a couple handy links to the Denver Post’s coverage:

Video captures alien visitor, Denverite says
Alien video: Puppet or real E.T.?

Okay, now that’s finally out of the way and off my hard drive and I’m off onto other things. What’s likely the most important thing is the interview I have tomorrow. It’s the first interview since I’ve started sending out resumes, although I’m the first to say not that many have gone out. Regardless, I’m glad at least there’s this one. My emm and I made a dry run this morning, so I would be sure to know exactly where I was going tomorrow afternoon; there’s nothing worse than looking for a place you’ve never been before and especially if a) you’re the only one in the car; b) you’ve got the added pressure of an expected appointment time; and c) that appointment is a job interview. I’ve tried on the only appropriate-for-an-interview outfit I own and thank goodness I’ve lost some weight; the last time I tried it on, which was just for shits and giggles, it didn’t fit all that well. So. Yeah, there we go. Got my car gassed up and washed today; it’s the first time I’ve bought gas since late April. I was only at a half a tank and it cost me $35; on one hand, that didn’t surprise me at all, but on the other hand, all I could say was, “What the fuck?”

There are a ton of new S!J!S! sound clips here, namely from “Planet of Evil,” “The Android Invasion,” and “The Brain of Morbius,” so please download them to your heart’s content. I’m still trying to figure out recording levels and all that, so if they’re not totally perfect, mea culpa. This is a totally cool by-product of needing more screen caps and finally breaking down and realizing the tele-top is just not going to work, at least as far as this is concerned. I’m still trying to figure out what the hell happened, although I’ve come to suspect it very well may have something to do with a recent momentary power failure; I was watching some Pertwee serial at the time and when the power failed, the tele-top just froze. Its battery power didn’t kick in at all, which I find a little odd, now that I’m thinking about it a little more. That doesn’t explain why only certain disks won’t play, though. But I finally stopped trying to fight it, only to be totally aggravated in the process and have pressed my trusty Mac into service. Ah, but it’s not as easy as all of that because for optimum comfort, I move the entire TARDIScloset operation into the living room and use the toy box (which remains unpainted) as a table/desk and lounge on the couch, trackball mouse resting on my leg. It’s quite lovely, really, and although I do love my TARDIScloset, it can get really warm in here even with a fan and between you and me, the whole thing about it being bigger on the inside is a bald-faced lie. I only say that because it makes people look at me cross-eyed.

I’ve also jumped on the LOL bandwagon and I’m probably quite late, just catching it on the way down to its death. This is the only picture I’ve captioned so far. Yes, it’s from Doctor Who (”Invasion of the Dinosaurs”) and yes, it’s S!J!S!, but despite that, the hard-core 70s look, not to mention the next-to-bad quality of the picture itself, I really do like the shot, and probably would no matter who was in it. But given enough time and opportunity, I could likely branch out into other television programs and movies.

That’s a great segue into the next topic, but I’m going to hold off for now because it’s time for dinner.
